A mind-expanding debut that reimagines Turkish folk through the lens of psych-funk, fuzzy grooves, and raw saz riffs.

With On, their 2018 debut album, Amsterdam-based group Altin Gün didn’t just revive the golden era of Anatolian rock—they dragged it through a wormhole and out the other side, transformed and pulsating with psychedelic funk energy. It’s the kind of record that feels both deeply rooted and wildly untethered, fusing tradition with fuzz pedals in a way that sounds as ancient as it does futuristic.

Founded by Dutch bassist Jasper Verhulst (of Jacco Gardner’s band), Altin Gün was born out of obsession: specifically, a love of Turkish legends like Barış Manço, Selda Bağcan, and Erkin Koray. But this is no retro pastiche. Joined by a multinational lineup—Turkish vocalist Merve Dasdemir, saz wizard and multi-instrumentalist Erdinc Yildiz Ecevit, plus players from Jungle By Night and The Mauskovic Dance Band—the group transforms folk standards into ecstatic dancefloor freak-outs. Think Anatolian wedding songs laced with wah-wah guitars, simmering Moog textures, and break-heavy drumming.

The songs, many written by Turkish icon Neşet Ertaş, maintain their original emotional weight—love, longing, destiny—but Altin Gün twist their time signatures and inject a raw, analogue warmth that makes each track feel brand new. Even if you don’t speak a word of Turkish, the language of groove and transcendence is universal here.

Released by Les Disques Bongo Joe, On helped kickstart a new wave of global interest in Anatolian psych and Turkish folk-rock, and remains one of the most essential entries in that canon. From the hypnotic, slow-burn sway of “Goca Dünya” to the fuzz-drenched urgency of “Tatlı Dile Güler Yüze,” this record is alive with electricity and soul.
