50 years in, Brazil’s jazz-funk giants return with a spiritual, groove-laden tribute to their legacy.
Marca Passo is the sound of Azymuth in motion - forward-looking, heart-centered, and steeped in five decades of Brazilian musical alchemy. This new full-length release marks the first since the passing of founding drummer Ivan “Mamão” Conti and celebrates the enduring soul of a group whose sonic blueprint forever changed the shape of jazz, funk, and samba.
Led by bassist Alex Malheiros and joined by longtime keyboardist Kiko Continentino and new drummer Renato Massa, Marca Passo feels both reflective and joyously alive - channeling the band’s roots in the golden era of MPB studio culture while pushing further into lush, cosmic territory. Producer Daniel Maunick - known for his work with Terry Callier and Marcos Valle - guides the sessions with warmth and finesse, balancing vintage textures with modern clarity.
Highlights include a reimagined take on the band’s 1980s classic “Last Summer In Rio” (featuring Incognito’s Bluey Maunick) and the deeply felt “Samba Pro Mamão,” a rhythm-forward tribute to their late drummer.
For longtime fans and new listeners alike, Marca Passo stands tall in Azymuth’s rich catalog - timeless, radiant, and distinctly their own.
