On Hang Loose! I Got Dem Ol' Surfer Bloos..., Penza Penza dive headfirst into the choppy waters of 1960s surf instrumentals, but not without bringing their own warped, psychedelic, and delightfully unhinged energy to the genre. Led by Estonian multi-instrumentalist Misha Panfilov, this fifth album is less homage and more surf music dismantled and rebuilt in the band’s signature style: noisy, freeform, funk-laced, and gloriously off-kilter.

From the grime-splattered riffs of “Hang Loose” to the slow-sinking, hallucinogenic haze of “Carl Wilson’s Morning Routine,” the record careens between legitimate surf chops and genre sabotage. “Surf Rodeo” and “Ro-Rotation” channel twang and reverb with chaotic glee, while “Flying Over the Sunset” sounds like The Tornados’ gear got run over and left to buzz from the wreckage.

It’s crusty, it’s weird, and it absolutely rips.
