Dropped in 2025, Superb by Australia’s cinematic soul maestros Surprise Chef is a funky, freewheeling evolution that cranks the energy and tosses the playbook out the window. Kicking off with “Sleep Dreams,” a warm, familiar soul jam that eases you in, Superb quickly shifts gears with “Bully Ball,” where gritty drums and guitars lay down a relentless funk pocket, bursting with raw, dancefloor swagger. Tracks like “Body Slam” surprise with a soulful opening that twists into haunting, timpani-drenched darkness (recorded in a bathroom for extra eerie resonance) while “Fare Evader” spices things up with sci-fi synth bleeps over a neck-snapping rhythm. Afro-funk flavors drive “Consulate Case,” and “Tag Dag” leans into jazz-funk’s upbeat pulse, both begging for a spin at a sweaty club night. Then there’s the dreamy side: “Websites” and “Dreamer’s Disease” showcase the band’s knack for ethereal, heart-tugging ballads that float like a summer breeze.
