Tel Aviv-born, Athens-based producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Alek Lee has been bending dancefloors to his will for two decades, but Cold Feet, released on the ever-stellar Isle of Jura records, might be his most immersive statement yet.
The record unfolds like a journey through Lee’s eclectic universe: smoky, guerrilla-style production shot through with swirling synths, layered percussion, Balearic guitar lines, and dubwise horns. The title cut opens the set with psychedelic, Sade-like grooves that are cinematic and mysterious before the mood brightens with “Pino Pino” and “The Right Thing,” both shimmering with sunlit Balearic disco flair. A clear standout comes with “Was Was Was,” a summer dub anthem featuring longtime collaborator Yovav Arzi on guitar, its loping groove primed for outdoor systems. Later, “Illusions” drops into sultry downtempo terrain with an eastern twist, before the closing “Cold Feet Desert” dissolves into stillness.
Known for marathon DJ sets and genre-defying live shows, Lee has earned co-signs from Iggy Pop, David Holmes, and Peggy Gou, while his projects Shame On Us and Project Runaway found their way to stages from Glastonbury to Fusion. Cold Feet pulls all those threads together into one of his most expansive works: a record that feels equally at home in headphones or on dancefloors as night tips into morning.
