Annie & The Caldwells – Can’t Lose My Soul

Released on Luaka Bop Records, Can’t Lose My Soul is a powerful, long-awaited debut from Annie & The Caldwells, a tight-knit family band carrying on a deep Mississippi soul tradition. Led by vocalist Annie Caldwell and her husband Willie Joe Caldwell Sr. on guitar, the group has spent decades performing together around their home town of West Point—weekends on stage, weekdays working regular jobs, raising kids, and running Annie’s Main Street clothing shop, Caldwell Fashions.

Recorded just down the road from their home, the album was tracked in a local church where Willie Joe still plays and where his father once served as a deacon. Producer Ahmed Gallab (Sinkane) and engineer Albert DiFiore brought a mobile studio to capture the band in their own space, and the results feel lived-in, natural, and full of spirit.

Annie’s voice is the heart of the record—raw, effortless, and steeped in experience. She’s backed by her daughters Deborah and Anjessica, goddaughter Toni Rivers, and sons Willie Jr. (bass) and Abel Aquirius (drums), a lineup that brings genuine warmth, grit, and a sense of family to every track. You can hear their years together in the way they lock in: soul harmonies that swell, rhythm sections that hit hard, and moments where laughter and tough love shape the take.

What emerges is a soulful, gospel-tinted disco record that feels as grounded as it is uplifting. Can’t Lose My Soul is the sound of a family playing the music they’ve lived with their whole lives. It's honest, joyful, and full of heart.
