Iceage frontman Elias Rønnenfelt pushes deeper into his own world on Speak Daggers, blending folk, post-punk, and hazy cloud-rap textures into a slow-burning, mood-heavy album. His voice still carries that raw, cracked intensity he’s known for, but the production here is wider, darker, and more experimental.
The record pulls in an impressive cast: the Congos add smoky melodica and echo to “Not Gonna Follow,” Erika de Casier brings a soft counterweight to the jagged “Blunt Force Trauma,” and Dean Blunt’s influence flickers through the more stripped-back, atmospheric tracks. Across the album, Rønnenfelt leans into themes of devotion, destruction, and inner conflict, often letting beats stumble, stretch, or dissolve beneath him.
Mona Lisa stands out as one of the album’s most gripping moments, pairing sharp strings and industrial percussion with a storyline about love, addiction, and collapse. “USA Baby” takes a different angle, framing political frustration through the eyes of a non-American watching the damage from up close.
Overall, Speak Daggers feels like Rønnenfelt carving out a space that’s distinctly his: brooding, bruised, and drawn toward the edges of genre. A compelling listen for anyone interested in post-punk that leans into atmosphere rather than speed, or for fans of Iceage who want to hear where his instincts go when he’s left to wander.
