A limited edition of just 100 copies, this release flew off the shelves when Potions Music first dropped it, and for good reason. Chicago-based trumpeter Gerald Bailey brings a distinct bedroom jazz aesthetic, drawing from hip-hop’s cyclical structures while layering in resonant improvisations. Gross Means isn’t just a collection of tracks, it’s a mood, shifting between robotic, electronic beats and warm, organic textures with ease.
Bailey’s compositions reflect pandemic-era solitude and post-pandemic upheaval, moving through hypnotic Ethiopian jazz motifs ("One Weak Vacay"), loose-limbed Second Line rhythms ("Lost Gold"), ominous ambient-industrial beats ("Bench Seat"), and explosive spiritual jazz workouts ("Sandboxing"). His trumpet work swings between meditative and urgent, speaking without words, carrying both righteous anger and quiet contemplation.
Featuring contributions from a small but potent cast of players - including additional drums (David Ageo, Dan Bailey, Harry James), synth textures (Chris Geddes, Kyle Hodges), bass (Jake Vinsel), and flute (Brad Wagner) - Bailey still keeps the vision tightly focused. His own arsenal of instruments includes bass, drums, synths (Fender Rhodes, Roland Juno-106, Teenage Engineering OP-1), toy grand piano, and his unmistakable trumpet.
