Originally released in 2019 by Funk Embassy Records, Groove of ESSR uncovers the vibrant and unexpected world of funk, disco, and jazz created in Soviet-era Estonia. Sourced from the archives of Estonian Radio, this 11-track compilation spans recordings from 1974 to 1988, capturing everything from folk-funk and psychedelic soul to library grooves and dancefloor-ready disco.
Though created behind the Iron Curtain, these tracks reflect a unique blend of influences - Western funk and soul filtered through the lens of local musicians steeped in jazz, rock, and folk traditions. Highlights include unreleased instrumentals from the Estonian TV and Radio Estrada Orchestra, a powerful Carita Holmström cover sung by Tiiu Varik, and flute-led jazz-funk from Uno Naissoo, a central figure in Estonia’s jazz history.
Equal parts archival discovery and dancefloor material, Groove of ESSR sheds light on a rich but little-known scene where musicians carved out freedom and creativity despite cultural restrictions. An essential document of Estonian musical history and a timeless listen for fans of global funk and jazz.
