For more than a decade, New York’s James K has been quietly shaping the edges of the electronic underground with a body of work that defies neat categories—part vocalist, part producer, part sonic shapeshifter. Friend, her new 2LP set housed in a gatefold sleeve, pulls those threads into focus, a record that feels like a summation of past experiments while opening a new portal forward.
Across its widescreen span, James K folds together breathy, intimate vocals with interwoven guitar, electronics, and finely detailed production, melodies shifting into view like half-recovered memories. There are echoes of the early urgency of K's early work, but here they’re refracted through a sharper, more deliberate lens. Longtime listeners will also hear traces of her many collaborations—Yves Tumor, Huerco S., LEYA, Drew McDowall—surfacing in textures and atmospheres that stretch between DIY rave grit and dream-pop shimmer.
Written and recorded between New York and Montreal with contributions from Special Guest DJ, Francis Latrielle, Patrick Holland and others, Friend is anchored by K’s melodic instinct, her vocals hovering in that space where words dissolve into pure feeling. The result is an album that compresses past, present, and future into a continuum: deeply personal yet outward-reaching, intimate yet expansive, a work that crystallises James K’s singular role in the international avant-pop underground.
