An underground classic from the godfather of the Hammond B3. Originally released in 1974, The Blacksmith finds Jimmy Smith turning up the funk and embracing the soul-jazz currents of the day. With tight rhythm section work, psychedelic guitar flourishes, and Smith’s unmistakable organ tone, it’s a groove-heavy LP that feels more Blaxploitation soundtrack than supper club set.
Tracks like “Hang ‘Em High” and “Groovin’ For Mr. G” pulse with cinematic energy, while deeper cuts like “Joy” showcase Smith’s gospel roots and fiery improvisation. This is a record that’s been sampled by Tyler, The Creator, Beastie Boys, Nas, and more, for good reason.
This is the 2006 reissue on Pride (PD6011). The cover is VG, still in original shrink wrap but with some shelf wear, and the vinyl is VG+, clean with just minor signs of play.
