Originally released in 1969, The Spice of Life captures Marlena Shaw at her most expressive, backed by the rich arrangements of Charles Stepney and Richard Evans. It’s a soulful, wide-ranging record that blends jazz, gospel, blues, soul and early funk into something both timeless and deeply personal.

Two of Shaw’s defining songs are here—“Woman of the Ghetto” and “California Soul.” Both have traveled far beyond the album, sampled and re-sampled across generations, and they remain as striking as ever: one a gripping social commentary, the other a bright, orchestral soul classic.

The rest of the record is full of strong, lesser-known moments. Shaw moves easily between fiery funk (“Liberation Conversation”), late-night jazz blues (“Call It Stormy Monday”), and slow-burn soul (“Where Can I Go?”), always bringing a clarity and emotional charge that feels unmistakably her own.

This 2025 reissue by Vampi Soul sounds great and makes this lost classic accessible again. If you’re into late-’60s Cadet/Chess productions, deep soul vocals, or anything touched by Stepney’s arranging style, this is an essential listen—an album that still resonates, still grooves, and still reveals new details with every spin.
