On Skyways, Estonian composer and multi-instrumentalist Misha Panfilov and his seven-piece ensemble deliver a beautiful, slow-burning exploration of spiritual jazz built around patience, improvisation and an almost telepathic sense of interplay.
Recorded over two late-summer days in Tallinn, the album consists of just two extended compositions, each unfolding gradually as the musicians find their way through gentle piano passages, warm upright bass, brushed percussion and spacious, atmospheric arrangements. Opening piece “The Sky for You and I” begins quietly before the full ensemble slowly enters, building a rich, immersive sound that feels both carefully arranged and completely spontaneous. On the flip side, “Fine and Dandy” follows a similarly unhurried path, gradually gathering momentum and developing into a beautifully restrained groove before drifting back into stillness. There's a strong sense of trust and communication between the musicians throughout, with each instrument given room to breathe and contribute to the larger picture.
Fans of Pharoah Sanders, Work Money Death and the more meditative side of spiritual jazz will find plenty to love here. A wonderfully immersive record that rewards patient listening and reveals a little more of itself with every spin.
