A cosmic jam session between Naples and Lagos, The Tony Allen Experiments is a radiant fusion of Afrobeat drumming and retro-futurist synths delivered by Nu Genea.
Originally released in 2016, this LP is part of Comet Records’ Afrobeat Makers series and draws directly from raw drum patterns recorded by the late, great Tony Allen—Fela Kuti’s rhythmic right hand and one of the greatest drummers of all time.
Nu Genea (formerly Nu Guinea) take those iconic grooves and orbit them through spacey keyboards, Italo disco basslines, analog delay, and swirling jazz-funk atmospheres. It’s psychedelic and percussive, bridging Afrobeat, electronic jazz, and funk in a way that feels at once handmade and deeply rooted. No track overstays its welcome; each one grooves in tight, hypnotic loops perfect for beat heads, DJs, and deep listeners alike.
More than a tribute, The Tony Allen Experiments is a reinterpretation with soul, warmth, and purpose - proof of what happens when open-format minds meet one of the most influential drummers in history.
