Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Horneij has been quietly building a reputation under the Organic Pulse Ensemble name, and Oppression Is Nine Tenths Of The Law shows exactly why. Working alone but sounding like a small collective, Horneij folds spiritual jazz, deep groove, and a strong political undercurrent into six focused pieces.
The title track opens with a driving, no-nonsense rhythm that sets the tone for what follows, while “Have Nots And Have Lots” spins a rolling, hypnotic cadence that blurs the line between meditation and movement. “Peace As A Political Statement” and “Double Standards” pull directly from jazz’s activist lineage, taut and urgent but never losing their flow. “Skulder Och Skuldror” nods to Horneij’s Scandinavian roots, its bass lines thick and percussion simmering with restraint, before “Balancing The Scales” signs off with steady determination.
It’s a record that feels stripped back but never slight—liberation music distilled to its essentials, played with sincerity and bite. Pressed in a limited run of 1000 copies and housed in a classic tip-on sleeve, this is a modern statement piece that sits comfortably in the lineage of spiritual jazz while sounding fresh, personal, and distinctly of the moment.
