Emerging from the shadows of private-press obscurity, The Spirit of David is a rare document of vision, rigor, and devotion. Originally recorded in 1974 and released two years later, the album stands as Oakland tenor saxophonist Jeff Jones’s first original work—one he arranged, wrote, and conceptualized with almost military precision.

Jones demanded total commitment from his musicians, drilling them for three years until they could perform the entire record in a single take. That discipline paid off: the music flows as one continuous suite, weaving spiritual jazz with soul, funk, and world textures into a hypnotic and deeply moving whole.

The lineup—Emmons Porter (bass vocals), Jack Spinovich (drums), Leonard Franklin (guitar), Ray Vega (percussion, congas), and Steve Espanosa (piano)—meets Jones’s vision with breathtaking cohesion. What emerges is a sound that captures both the turbulence and hope of its time: searching, expansive, and transcendent.

Now lovingly reissued by Frederiksberg Records, this long-elusive masterpiece finally receives the context it deserves, with extensive liner notes by Karl Evangelista tracing its history and cultural weight.
