Soft Cuff - Thick Heat

St. Petersburg, Florida five-piece Soft Cuff make a seriously impressive debut with Thick Heat, a sun-soaked blend of instrumental funk, soul, jazz, and psychedelic rock. Built around warm guitar tones, groovy basslines, swirling keys, and tight percussion, the album has a wonderfully laid-back feel while leaving plenty of room for the band to stretch out and explore.

There’s a strong cinematic quality running through the record, with tracks like “Thick Heat” and “Scorsese’s Dream” sounding like they could have been lifted straight from a forgotten ’70s spy thriller. Elsewhere, “Pico Suave” and “Rudy” bring hypnotic grooves and colorful psychedelic textures into the mix. If you’re into the instrumental sounds of Khruangbin, Surprise Chef, or early Menahan Street Band, there’s a lot to love here. A great little discovery for fans of groove-heavy, slightly psychedelic instrumental music.
