Spiritual jazz takes flight once more with Orbits, the radiant second album from New Zealand’s cosmic ensemble The Circling Sun. Following their breakout debut Spirits, the group returns on Soundway Records with an evolved, expansive sound - one that swirls Afro-Cuban rhythms, samba, soul, synths, and Māori/Pacifica tradition into a deeply meditative whole.

From the joyful opener “Constellation” to the weightless, dub-touched closer “Evening,” Orbits is a record of ecstatic groove and celestial reverence. Tracks like “Mizu” and “Amina” breathe freely with shimmering Rhodes, polyrhythmic percussion, and abstract, mantra-like vocals courtesy of the Love Affinity Choir. There are nods to Azymuth, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Pharoah Sanders, and Arthur Verocai - but The Circling Sun chart their own course across these sonic starfields.
