The Seven Ups - A Free Blowing Wind

Melbourne’s The Seven Ups take their heavy, groove-driven sound into more expansive territory on A Free Blowing Wind, their fifth studio album. Known for their explosive blend of instrumental funk, jazz, and psychedelic rock, the band stretches out across a collection of deep, hypnotic grooves, swirling guitars, and cinematic arrangements that feel equally suited to a packed dancefloor or a late-night listening session.

There’s a wonderful balance between the album’s heavier, more energetic moments and its spacious, atmospheric passages. The ten-minute “A Cosmic Scale” is a sprawling psychedelic journey, while tracks like “Dimmed Lights” bring things back down to earth with a gentler, more meditative feel. If you’re into the instrumental grooves of The Budos Band, Khruangbin, or Surprise Chef but like things a little heavier and more psychedelic, this one is well worth digging into.
