The Sorcerers return with Other Worlds and Habitats, a deeply textured evolution of their signature Ethio-inspired jazz, steeped in analogue warmth and shimmering with forward-looking psychedelia.
Released via Leeds-based ATA Records, this is the fourth LP from the trio of Neil Innes (bass), Joost Hendrickx (drums), and Richard Ormrod (reeds/flute/vibes)—this time joined by synth wizard Johnny Richards, whose vintage keyboards (Jen 73, Mellotron, Farfisa) propel the group’s sound into uncharted astral territory.
Where past records like I Too Am A Stranger lingered in dusky mystique, Other Worlds and Habitats feels expansive and widescreen. Tracks like "Ancestral Machines" and "Abandoned Satellites" dance between tradition and exploration, pulling from the spectral grooves of Hailu Mergia and William Onyeabor, while still rooted in ATA’s hallmark cinematic jazz aesthetic. It's spiritual, funky and spacey
Born partially on the road during the band’s first-ever tour in Denmark, there’s a lived-in, organic feel throughout. “The Great Belt” captures a bleary-eyed, twilight melancholy from a sleepless drive over a Nordic bridge. Elsewhere, shimmering synth textures glide alongside modal basslines and hypnotic percussion.
Other Worlds and Habitats isn't just a record, it’s a world within a world. A stunning expansion of The Sorcerers’ sonic universe that feels both ancient and boldly futuristic.
