Following up the much-loved Surinam! Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dance Floors ‘76–’83, selectors Antal Heitlager and Thomas Gesthuizen return with Surinam Funk Force, a deeper dive into the overlooked funk, disco, and soul treasures of Surinam’s vibrant 1970s and ’80s scene.

Drawn from rare 45s and LP cuts, this ten-track collection captures a golden era when Surinamese musicians fused American funk sensibilities with local rhythms and a sun-drenched Caribbean pulse. The result is a kaleidoscope of grooves: slinky basslines, sweet falsettos, horn-driven hooks, and irresistible dance-floor heat.

Highlights include Ronald Snijders’ kinetic “Kaseko Attack,” Jam Band 80’s seductive “Jammin’,” and Sumy’s silky slow-burner “The Funky ‘G’ (Only Comes at Night).” Each track reflects a moment of cultural cross-pollination between Paramaribo and Amsterdam, where Surinam’s diaspora found new sounds, studios, and audiences.

With fresh artwork by Cosmo Knex (Johann Kauth) and endorsements from tastemakers like Gilles Peterson and Motor City Drum Ensemble, Surinam Funk Force isn’t just a reissue compilation, it’s a vital document of a scene that bridged continents, turning colonial history into something joyful, electric, and defiantly alive.
