Leeds jazz collective Work Money Death return to ATA Records with A Portal To Here, a powerful double-LP shaped by loss, memory, and spiritual searching. Created in the wake of guitarist Chris “Earl” Dawkins’ passing, the album unfolds across four side-long improvisations that channel grief into transcendence. Led by Tony Burkill’s piercing tenor sax and supported by dense horns, piano, harp, and a deeply locked rhythm section, the music draws clear lineage from the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, and Sun Ra while remaining firmly rooted in the modern UK scene. Expansive, emotional, and fully improvised, it’s jazz as ritual, music for healing, remembrance, and collective release.
