Maya Ongaku - Approach to Anima

On Approach to Anima, Maya Ongaku emerge fully formed from their seaside enclave of Enoshima with a debut that feels timeless, like music unearthed from some forgotten coast. Blending psychedelia, folk, and jazz with field recordings of birds, water, and wind, the trio build soundscapes that breathe as naturally as they play.

Delicate guitar and hushed vocals drift over fluid bass, woodwinds and percussion, creating an atmosphere both grounded and otherworldly. The opener “Approach” unfolds slowly, like morning light across still water; “Melting” channels a soft, jazz-laced pulse; and the 11-minute “Water Song” expands into pure reverie, a meditation on movement, nature, and memory.

Released on Guruguru Brain, the label founded by Go Kurosawa and Tomo of Kikagaku Moyo, Approach to Anima captures that same spirit of curiosity and community. It’s a debut that doesn’t chase transcendence but still manages to find it quietly, in the spaces between.
