Flying Vipers – Off World

Off World marks a turning point for Flying Vipers, their third full-length and first to feature the soulful lead vocals of Kellee Webb after a decade rooted in instrumental, dubwise reggae. Released via Easy Star Records, the album expands the band’s cassette-crafted sound into something more lyrical and expansive, pairing heavy drum-and-bass foundations with melodies that feel equal parts grounded and otherworldly. Mostly built on originals, Off World is framed by a striking trio of covers: a stark alienation anthem from Wipers, the theme from the cult animated film La Planète Sauvage featuring harpist Brandee Younger, and what may be the first-ever dubwise tribute to Sun Ra. Songs like “Believers & Deceivers” and “Jackals” wrestle with modern disillusionment, questioning whether life on Earth is something to endure or escape, while the grooves remain steadfast, anchoring even as the music drifts into deep sonic space.
